About

Michael Villarmia was born in the Philippines and emigrated to the United States with his family in 1985. He photographed downtown Los Angeles from 2011 until he left it on Halloween night, 2021, and between 2011 and 2017 made the work in Know Not What We May Be across eleven countries, thirty of its seventy plates in the country he was born in. He lives in Maine.

Both books were completed in 2026. His current project, The Ground, is on New Clark City in Tarlac — the former Camp O'Donnell, where the Bataan Death March ended, now allocated as a semiconductor hub under Pax Silica.
